How this blog got its name

Welcome to my new blog about various networking topics.  The topics will range from the elementary to (what I consider) very complex.

Somewhat funny story of how I named this blog.

Several years ago I was talking to my manager at the time.  He was already aware that he wasn't going to be my manager much longer as we were talking about my future.  At the time, I was an aspiring network engineer with very little experience.  I was having some trouble wrapping my brain around the vastness that is networking.  I was struggling with Internet routing using BGP at the time.  I was expressing my frustration with the options and scalability of BGP.  I then expressed my desire and plan to pursue CCIE certification.

I began to explain how difficult that certification can be to obtain and how much demand there is for people with that skill set.  His response?  You guessed it..."I don't see what the big deal is.  It's just routing."  There were several people within ear-shot listening to the conversation.  Fast forward 10 years and this seemingly ridiculous statement lives on.  It is repeated back to me in various situations at least once every couple of weeks.

I said "seemingly" because surprisingly, I sometimes use the statement as a teaching tool.  There is some wisdom in removing the fear of infrastructure configuration for more junior engineers.

I will make an effort to post on this blog weekly.  Again, the topics will likely be related to networking technology.  Thanks for stopping by.

Matt :)
